A Bayesian approach towards facilitating climate change adaptation research on the South African agricultural sector AgEcon
Musango, J.K.; Peter, C..
Evaluating the range of proposed adaptation measures to combat the sensitivity of agriculture to climate change effects involves evaluating complex interactions between human and natural systems. Integrated strategy-making and implementation in the agricultural sector to reduce the risks posed by climate change requires the consideration of multiple, interdisciplinary factors and the sensitivities of their inter-relationships. Lack of information on the sensitivity of agricultural activities to climate change in Africa hampers climate change adaptation research on the region. In water scarce South Africa, the growth of the agricultural sector is threatened by projected decreases in water availability due to climate change. This paper shows how Bayesian...

Genetic parameters and trends of morphometric traits of GIFT tilapia under selection for weight gain Scientia Agricola
Reis Neto,Rafael Vilhena; Oliveira,Carlos Antônio Lopes de; Ribeiro,Ricardo Pereira; Freitas,Rilke Tadeu Fonseca de; Allaman,Ivan Bezerra; Oliveira,Sheila Nogueira de.
The main factor considered in breeding programs for fish is growth, which can be assessed in terms of a gain in either weight or body measurements. This study was undertaken to evaluate the morphometric traits of GIFT strain tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) selected for weight gain. The data set used contained information on 6,650 animals. The genetic values of 8,590 animals in a relationship matrix of five generations were predicted. The following morphometric measurements were evaluated: standard length; body depth and body width. Body area and volume were also calculated. Bi-character analyses involving morphometric traits were used to estimate (co)variance components. Heritability, larval and fingerling common environmental effects were estimated for each...

Long-term fishing impact on the Senegalese coastal demersal resources: diagnosing from stock assessment models ArchiMer
Ba, Kamarel; Thiaw, Modou; Fall, Massal; Thiam, Ndiaga; Meissa, Beyah; Jouffre, Didier; Thiaw, Omar Thiom; Gascuel, Didier.
For the first time in Senegal, assessments based on both stochastic and deterministic production models were used to draw a global diagnosis of the fishing impact on coastal demersal stocks. Based one national fisheries databases and scientific trawl surveys data: (i) trends in landings since 1971 were examined, (ii) abundance indices of 10 stocks were estimated using linear models fitted to surveys data and commercial catch per unit efforts, and (iii) stock assessments were carried out using pseudo-equilibrium Fox and Pella-Tomlinson models and a Biomass dynamic production model fitted in a Bayesian framework to abundance indices. Most stocks have seen their abundance sharply declining over time. All stocks combined, results of stock assessments suggest a...
